From the dance floor to the street: hijacked lyrics
The “Feminishift” series aims to parody and recontextualize popular songs whose lyrics convey deeply misogynistic and sexist messages. By twisting these lyrics into feminist slogans, I attempt to critically reflect on how pop culture contributes to the perpetuation of gender stereotypes and propose a playful way of subverting them.
Visually, the series is inspired by suffragette banners and protest signs, recalling past and present struggles for women’s rights. The choice of purple, the symbolic color of feminism, reinforces this connection while evoking resistance and solidarity. Each parodied sentence is enhanced with glittering watercolor, in reference to the “diamantina rosa” (pink glitters) that have become the symbol of feminist struggles, particularly in Mexico.
“Feminishift” is an invitation to reconsider our relationship with music, popular culture, and the way they shape our perceptions of gender. By rewriting and transforming these songs as slogans of resistance, the series proposes a shift that transforms patriarchy into empowerment, submission into resistance, and silence into a collective voice.
